Abida and Ramesh want to heat water taken in separate beakers. Abida kept the beaker near the wick in the yellow part of the candle flame. Ramesh kept the beaker in the outermost part of the flame. Whose water will get heated in a shorter time? Why?

Answer:

The water in the Ramesh's beaker will heat up in a shorter time. This is because the outermost zone of a flame is the hottest zone in which the complete combustion is taking place, while the yellow zone (in which Abida had kept the beaker) is less hot as this is the middle zone which is the zone of partial combustion so it is less hotter than the outermost zone.

Ramesh's water will get heated in a shorter time

Explanation:

There are three zones in a candle flame. Each zone has different temperatures and different colours. Due to complete combustion, the outer zone is blue in color and it is the hottest. The yellow color region which is the bright part of the flame is the middle zone. It is moderately hot and partial combustion of fuel takes place. The least hot region of the flame is present innermost. This inner zone is black in color due to the presence of unburnt wax vapors.

Abida kept the beaker near the wick in the yellow part of the candle flame, which is moderately hot. Ramesh kept the beaker in the outermost part of the flame, which is the hottest. So Ramesh's water will get heated in a shorter time.
