Raziya Sultana was the daughter of Shams-ud-din Iltutmish. Iltutmish nominated Raziya as his successor. Raziya Sultana was the first and last woman muslim ruler of the medieval period. She was unique in the history of the Delhi Sultanate. She was a brave, intelligent and just woman. She possessed all the qualities of a great king. She was also an excellent horse rider. She dressed like a man and personally led her army in battles. But, the nobles did not like the idea of being ruled by a woman. The chronicler of the age, Minhaj-i-Siraj recognised that although Raziya was more able and qualified than all her brothers, yet, he thought a queen's rule went against the ideal social order created by God, in which women were supposed to be subordinate to men. Ultimately, she was killed in AD 1240. After Raziya, a less number of important sultans came to throne till AD 1266. One of these was Nasir-ud-din Mahmud who ruled from AD 1246–1266. From AD 1266, Ghiyasuddin Balban extended the rule and came into throne.
