Refractive index of medium = (velocity of light in vacuum)/(velocity of light in the medium)
Since, velocity of light has the maximum value (3 × 108 m/s) in vacuum. The numerator is always greater than the denominator in the above relation. Hence, refractive index is always greater than 1.
