it is known as eutrophication.the overuse of chemicals such as phosphates are taken to rivers by rainwash due to which algae grows and forms a layer on the surface of water preventing sunlight to enter due to which the level of dissolved oxygen in water decrease.Due to lack of oxygen and absence of sunlight the aquatic flora and fauna gets killed.
