Julius Caesar

A.

In Act I Scene I we witness the Roman citizens crowding on the streets to catch a glimpse of their favourite hero- Julius Caesar.

The Senators of Rome however are not happy. They fear Caesar will be the coronated King and Rome will no longer be free. It will be ruled under the dictatorship of Caesar.

Marullus is one of the senators. He dislikes the attitude of the Roman citizens who are celebrating the return of Caesar.

According to Marullus the  citizens are 'blocks and stones'. They do not have any intelligence or patriotism. They are rejoicing at the triumph of Caesar over another Roman, the great Pompeii.

Marullus treats the common people with anger and disgust. He orders them to return to their works . He says that they should be ashamed of themselves for supporting Caesar and forgetting Pompeii.

B. The citizens feel ashamed and guilty because they are rejoicing at the victory of Caesar over another Roman -Pomepii, who they had revered and loved and had thronged to see him when he had returned to Rome.

Now they feel guilty as they realise they have shown disrespect and betrayed Pompeii.
