Yoga is a group of physical mental and spiritual practices or discipline which orginated in ancient India . Yoga is primarily spiritual discipline that concentrates on subtle science that focuses on achieving harmony between individual's mind and body . The word yoga first appeared in the oldest sacred texts , the Rig Veda and is derived from the Sanskrit word " Yug " which mean join or unite . According to the Yogic Scriptures the the practice of yoga leads an individual to the union of conviousness with that of universal conviousness .

Maharishi Patanjali defines Yoga as restrictions of fluctuations of consciousness. The practice of yoga starts by sitting and calming your body. The fluctuations of body, breath and senses will calm eventually.

Patanjali describes yoga as having eight components which are explained below:-

  • Yamas:- They are ethical oaths in the Yogic tradition. It can be thought of as moral essentials. Patanjali state how and why each self restraints helpful in the someone's growth.
  • Niyama: Niyama involves behaviors, observances and virtuous habits.
  • Asana: Asana is a meditation posture that has to hold for a period of time, staying comfortable, relaxed, steady, and motionless.
  • Pranayama: Pranayama is combination of two Sanskrit words 'prana' and 'ayama' where prana means breath and ayama means  restraining. This is done in many ways, inhaling and then suspending exhalation for a time, exhaling and then hanging inhalation for a period, calmly the inhalation and exhalation, consciously.
  • Pratyahara:- Pratyahara is a process of withdrawing the sensory experience from external objects for self extraction and abstraction.
  • Dharana :- Dharana as the sixth component of yoga. It holds your  mind onto a particular inner state. Fixing the mind on one topic means one-pointed focus, without jumping from one topic to another and without drifting of mind.
  • Dhyana: Dhyana is reflecting on whatever Dharana has focused on. If in the sixth limb of yoga one focused on a personal deity, Dhyana is its inspection. Dhyana and Dharana are related to each other. WE can say that, Dharana is a state of mind while Dhyana the process of mind.
  • Samadhi: Samadhi is process of meditation. During the eighth component of yoga, there is no difference between the act of meditation, the actor of meditation, and the subject of meditation.
