Signed into law in May 1862, the Homestead Act opened up settlement in the western United States, allowing any American, including freed slaves, to put in a claim for up to 160 free acres of federal land.

The population grew in the territories. The cattle-ranching industry grew.
As per the Homestead Act, 160 acres of government land were to be assigned to those people who requested for it outside the areas of the thirteen real colonies, in the wilds.
This law was in three phases: a request for assignment, a commitment for working on the land and getting a property title.
People who had never confronted the US government were eligible to apply for an assignment in a local office.
Even freed slaves had a right for the same.
