The  Ruler Postulate is  a system to determine the length of a segment, which is equal to the distance between its endpoints . The postulate states: Points on the Real number line correspond to Real numbers. The distance between two points is the absolute value of the difference of the corresponding numbers.

On a number line, every point can be paired with a number and every number can be paired with a point. The number associated with a point  on a number line is called its coordinate.

The set of points on any line corresponds to the coordinate .
