According to Woolf, it would have been impossible for a woman of 17th century to write great literary works. She has valid reasons to believe this. She say women would not have been able to write good quality literature at that period, not because they did not have the ability to do so, but because they did not have the right circumstances. She does this by creating a fictional character called Judith, who is supposedly the sister of William Shakespeare and compares the difference in social conditions for a woman and man of the time period.
