With my views the small farmars are landless because the demand of flat, houses, shopping mall etc and also for money hazards.so the poor farmars are become landless . i hope it helps you

It's because they will be in debt. As they are poor, they may get loans from landlords or moneylenders. But some may be unable to repay the loan, so they may sell their small plots of land also and become landless laborers unfortunately!
