Account for the following
.1 dry HCL does not change the colour of blue litmus paper 2.alcohol and glucose contain hydrogen but do not conduct electricity 3. Concentration of H3O+ ions is affected when a solution of acid is diluted
Answers
Answer:
Answer. 1)Dry HCl does not change the colour of litmus paper because water is required for the formation of hydronium ions which is responsible for the colour change of litmus paper. 2) The compounds such as glucose and alcohol also contain hydrogen but they do not show acidic character.
1. HCL gas does not change the colour of dry Litmus Paper because it has no hydrogen ions or h + ions in it which can impart acidic properties to it.
2. Only those compound containing hydrogen are considered to be Acid which dissolve in water to produce hydrogen ions. The hydrogen containing compounds such as alcohol and glucose are not catagorised as acid because they do not ionize to produce hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. this is proved by the fact that the aqueous solution of alcohol and glucose do not conduct electricity .
3. The concentration of hydronium ions decreases when an acid is diluted because on adding water the H+ ions of the acid and hydroxyl ions of water react to form water molecules and the concentration of hydronium ions decreases.
