Coal does not burn by itself in air, as because coal is in the form of carbon that is non-metal due to exceptional having melting and boiling point, hence it does not caught easily when exposed to air, btw as Coal is a carbon content so when on once limited by flame it continues to burn after reaching its high boiling, melting point and then burn continously
