Acetylene can be converted into acetic acid in two steps;-
- Reaction of acetylene with water (in the presence of sulphuric acid, and mercuric sulphate as catalysts) to produce acetaldehyde.
- Acetaldehyde is then oxidised (with potassium dichromate for example) to produce acetic acid.
