things which inspired the demands for reform were:

1. Pope Leo X promoted the Medici interests - He favoured his family's interests and expanded their territory as well as their influence within the Church.

2. He adopted a pro-French policy - He allowed France to occupy Milan and other parts of northern Italy. He also permitted them to occupy high positions in the Church.

3. He waged a war against Urbino - He spent a lot of money in the war against Urbino because he wanted to give the throne to his nephew Lorenzo the Younger de Medici.

4. He was partial - He promoted six relatives to the rank of cardinal.

5. He failed to implement reforms - He did not grasp the seriousness of the dissatisfaction of the people with the Church. His response was directed at Martin Luther himself instead of the issues that he raised.

6. He did not manage the finances in a responsible manner - He spent a lot of money on festivals, feasts, processions, and theatrical performances. The papal treasury was full when Leo X was elected. But it became empty and had a staggering debt within a few years.
