ACTIVITY 2 (Experimental
investigation): Nutrients and
plant growth
Germinate some moong seeds for 12-18 hours.
Let them grow into seedlings. This may take
1-2 days more.
Collect some soil, compost and NPK
fertilizers. These will have to be mixed as
explained below.
Take four empty glasses. In the first
glass, put some soil mixed with compost.
In the second glass, put soil mixed
with NPK fertilizer. In the third glass,
put some soil mixed with both compost
and NPK fertilizer. In the fourth glass,
put some soil with no manure or fertilizer
mixed with it.
Select some equal-sized seedlings, and
plant two seedlings in the soil mixture in
each glass. Pour the same amount of water
in each glass. Keep the seedlings in the
sun. Water them regularly and observe
their growth for about 10 days. Note your
observations.
In which glass was the growth fastest, i.e.
in which glass did the seedlings become tallest?
Which glass showed better growth of seedlings,
i.e. which glass showed healthier seedlings

Answer:

Plantlets in vessel R shows the maximum growth because NPK fertilizer is readily soluble in water and is quick acting. When it is applied to the soil, nitrogen is rapidly changed into ammonia. Later seeds use this ammonia for its growth and development. The Plantlets in vessel P and Q shows normal growth but less compared to vessel C. The growth of the plantlets in vessel D is least because the soil is infertile due to lack of certain soil nutrients.

From the experiment, it can be concluded that plants require nutrients (manure and fertilizers) for better growth.
