An object floats under the surface of a liquid if the down ward gravitational and upward force by the liquid, acting on the body are equal and opposite. 2. If the gravitational force is greater than the upward force of the liquid, the object sinks. 3. If the upward force of liquid is greater than the downward gravitational force, the object floats above the surface of water.​
