Aim of the Activity :-

  • To test whether the solution of water and quick lime is acidic or basic .

Materials RequireD :-

  • A beaker , quick lime , water , a dropper and litmus solution .

Procedure :-

  • Take a beaker and pour water in it.
  • Carefully take a small amount of quick lime ( CaO ) and add to it.
  • Stir them carefully .
  • Allow the solution to rest for some time .
  • Now with the help of a dropper add the litmus solution ( red) to it.

Observations :-

  • Quick lime reacts vigoursly with water to form Calcium Hydroxide .
  • The reaction involves release of heat energy .
  • After the addition of litmus solution , the red color of litmus changes to blue .

The Reaction of water and quick lime is ,

\boxed{\red{\sf CaO + H_2O \to Ca(OH)_2 }}

Inference :-

  • The Calcium Hydroxide is basic in nature as it converts red litmus Solution to blue .
