Take a magnesium ribbon. burn this magnesium ribbon in air. collect the ash dissolve the ash in water then dip a red litmus paper in the solution. The red litmus turns into blue color. this indicates the solution is basic nature. In the above experiment Magnesium is a metal. after burning in air it forms MgO (ash).Magnesium oxides on dissolving in water forms a basic solution called magnesium hydroxide.
