I do it this way, not sure if it'll work for you, but it's worth a try:

So you have 16, 12, and 14

Break them all down in your head

16 - Is 10 and 6

14 - Is 10 and 4

12 - is 10 and 2

You have 3 set of 10's which = 30

then 6+4 = 10, add this to the 30 and you get 40

Your remainder is 2 so add the 2 to 40

and you get 42
