All we need to do is add the times. First I like to split up the hours and minutes and seconds:

40min+20min+50min

10sec+30sec+10sec

Now we add starting with the largest ones, the hours:

2+3+5=10       So far there are 10h.

Now minutes. Because there are 60 minutes in each hour and 40min+20min=60min we will have a whole hour and so on so forth:

40+20+50=110       So now we have 110min or 1h 50min.

Next seconds. Like minutes there are also 60 seconds in one minute:
