Adding powder Cu and Zn to a solution containing one molar each of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions would result in the formation of Cu and Zn²⁺.

  • Since zinc lie above copper in the activity series of metals, zinc can reduce Cu²⁺ to copper and itself get oxidized to Zn²⁺ while the reverse reaction is not feasible.
  • Hence, Cu and Zn²⁺ originally present remains as it is while the Cu²⁺ is reduced by zinc forming more of Cu and Zn²⁺.
