The adipose tissue is one of the types of the loose connective tissues. It is composed of fact cells also know as adipocytes which are largely made up of fat. The adipose tissue has three main functions; storage of energy in form of fat, cushioning of internal organs and providing heat insulation to the body.
The adipose tissue is a good heat insulator owing to the the fat store in it. Fat is a poor conductor of heat and it is this property of fats that gives the adipose tissue its insulating capabilities.
The adipose tissue insulates against uncontrolled heat loss from the body to the environment or gain of heat from the environment to the body. This is important as the core body temperature should always be maintained at a certain range(36.5–37.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F)) to promote normal body function.
