Advantages of a twin cylinder engine over single cylinder

For the entry level riding segment, there's several interesting options, and an even more interesting option around the corner that all utilize either a single cylinder or a dual cylinder setup.
Bikes like the Ninja 300 use the dual, but both Honda and KTM opted for singles instead.
I'm aware of the power and torque figures roughly, for the modern era small displacement bikes, but I haven't ridden any of them.
Does anyone have the time to explain the technical differences (other than one has 1 and one has 2?) and what the benefits are of each vs the cons?
