Ellingham diagram is actually a graph which shows the temperature dependence of the stability of compounds. It helps in evaluating the ease of reduction of metal oxides as well as sulfides. Ellingham diagram was constructed by "Harold Johann Thomas Ellingham'' in the year 1944.

Limitations;
1) Ellingham diagram does not consider kinetics of the reactions.
2) Also, It can't provide us full information about oxide formation, if more than one oxides are possible.

Hope this will help you.

Advantages of Ellingham diagram

Answer

Ellingham diagram => the graph of variation of ΔrG vs .T for the formation of metal oxide from metal is called ellingham diagram

Its application / limitations

→ it does not say about the kinetics of reduction process

→ the interpretation of ΔrG is based on equilibrium constant K .
