advantages of peer assessment
Answers
reater quantity of feedback
Peer assessment is a means of providing each student with much more feedback than may be otherwise possible, particularly in larger cohorts. Whilst it is acknowledged that feedback from student peers may not be as authoritatively informed as that from 'expert' tutors or lecturers, students can still gain much (Race, 2001).
Exposure to broad range of perspectives
By seeing and critiquing the work of peers, students are exposed to a broader range of ideas, values and perspectives, enriching the learning experience. This exposure can also help students to consider new ways of thinking about their own performance.
By having their own work critiqued by peers, again provides students with a broad range of views, opinions, ideas and perspectives than they may otherwise have considered.
Deeper understanding of quality
Asking students to make judgments about a wide range of work helps them gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of the criteria and standards, and helps them to recognise the characteristics of quality work. This in turn helps them gain insight into their own performance which (should) lead to the production of better quality work themselves.
Encourage active learning & collaboration
Peer assessment requires students to engage with the assessment task, think about the assessment criteria and use the criteria to make a judgment about another's work. It is by nature a collaborative process which requires your students to interact with each other, and assist each other to improve the quality of their work.
Develop self assessment skills
Peer assessment processes are useful for developing students' self assessment skills as through judging the work of others, students gain insight into their own performance.
