Advantages of potentiometer over voltmeter:

  • Potentiometer gives the exact value of potential difference across any two points in a circuit because it never draws any current from the circuit.
  • But Voltmeter draws apart from the current so we will get an error in measurement of the potential difference.
  • Potentiometer can be used for measuring the internal resistance of a cell and also compare the EMF(electromotive force) of two cells , which cannot be done with a Voltmeter.
  • The potentiometer is a highly sensitive device and we can measure even a small EMF but in case of a voltmeter, we cannot measure a small EMF.
  • The another advantage in the case of a potentiometer that we can change the length of the potentiometer wire and increase the accuracy of the instrument according to our requirement which is not possible in case of the voltmeter.
  • In voltmeter, the precision is fixed and we further cannot change it.
