In telecommunication and data transmission, serial communication is the process of sending data one bit at a time, sequentially, over acommunication channel or computer bus. This is in contrast to parallel communication, where several bits are sent as a whole, on a link with severalparallel channels.

Answer:

Serial mode offers the advantage of fewer traces on the pc board, and fewer pins on the devices. Parallel offers the advantage of transferring 8 data bits per I/O clock cycle, but at the disadvantage of many more pins required on the devices.
