No, I do not completely agree with this view. Advertisement has got advantages and disadvantages both.

Explanation:

Advantages of Advertising

  1. Mass media generate enormous revenues through ads. We can get a newspaper at a low price thanks to these advertising. Such revenues make the media financially stable through the medium of advertisement and media can freely and openly publish all matters of public interest.
  2. True and helpful information can be obtained through ads on goods, costs, quality, service etc. The new products may also be informed to people living in remote areas, far-away places or outside the world.
  3. People get benefit from advertising as it facilitates in generating employment. It makes a positive impact on people who work for ad companies  and in mass media such as TV, newspapers, etc, since these people good income. In different advertising agencies and the mass media, numerous designers, models, technicians, etc, work to earn their living.
  4. Company owners tend to use ads rather than personal sales, though advertisement costs are significantly lower. If advertisement is not being used as a means for selling products, businesses may use costlier methods. The market rises with advertisement and output rises in turn. Increased quality results in cost savings. These economies of scale have certain advantages which offset the cost of ads.

Disadvantages

  1. Ads lead to certain social consquences.  Because of such ads, the materialistic beliefs and lifestyles of people in society are affected.Aat times certain inappropriate  appeals are used to call attention to the customers, dissatisfaction. This creates disappointment and frustration  when a person is unable  to purchase and benefit from a product.
  2. Owing to ads it is difficult for small competitors to enter the market. This is because big corporations create obstacles. It is hard for new entrants to compete with these big and existing companies unless massive financial resources are available. Advertising serves as an entry barrier which results in a monopoly.
  3. Small and large rivals compete with each other to establish their brand identity. This often contributes to disputes sometimes. It is nice to have fair competition however a conflict-oriented competition is never useful.
  4. A lot of money needs to be put into advertising a product. Where advertisement spending is reduced, the costs of the goods can be reduced and put at cheaper and reasonable rates available to customers. When the businessmen use the money to boost the product value rather than selling it, customers will get a better product.
