anaerobic respiration in muscle cells due to lack of oxygen leads to formation and accumulation of lactic acid which causes pain, ie, cramps

Because of lactic acid. Accumulation it is due to anaerobic respiration in the muscles and the glucose is not broken into simpler compounds but forms. Lactic acid which gets accumulated and causes pain
