because of inertia of motion
The man jumping out from a moving bus possesses the inertia of motion. As the man lands on the gorund, feet come to rest immediately while the upper part of body continue to move due to inertia of motion and hence the person may fall forward.
so, in order to match with motion of upper part of body, we need to run for some distance, to avoid falling.

This is because the upper part of our body comes at rest and lower part still in the motion so lower part takes some time to come at rest.
Hope it helps.
