After Blenheim" by Robert Southey is an anti-war poem in the form of a ballad.  It centres on the most famous battle in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). In this the poet uses  an ironic tone, in which the poet describes the general people's perceptions regarding war and how they are exposed to misinformation indoctrinated through battle.

EXPLANATION:

  • Through a conversation between an old farmer, Kaspar and his grandchildren, Wilhelmine and Peterkin the poet gradually reveals the scene of a former battlefield. The war caused huge devastation and thousands of casualties. Yet Old Kasppar seems not to be worried because he says that ' things like this must be a famous victory. His terrible explanations, his casual words, have an ironic impact. It's ironic it was a big war, but nobody knows why
  • At the end of poem Little Peterkine could not reconcile himself to the stance of his grandpa. He was still stunned. He wanted to know the big cause for which the war was being fought. A Wilhelmine puzzled exclaimed it (battle) to be ' false ' and wondered how her grandfather could praise such a gory war.
  • The tone is cynical and sarcastic in the above paragraphs. Ironically enough, while Kaspar had not known what was good to the people in Blenheim, the old man assumed it was a well-known victory. And the poet reveals how warlords have indoctrinated the ideology of warlords. Thus the poet presents the conflict between the glorious notion of war and the truth of war in the poem.
  • The message or theme of the poem is that The message of the poet is against war. He wants to convey that war is not connected to courage or patriotism. This is a misinformation produced to their own benefit by some skillful men. War can not in any way be' big' or' popular' because it leads to death and property loss. This must be understood by common people and a war against war must begin. The poem sends a strong message that war is not a choice, nor does nothing ever justify the deaths or damage caused by war, but that war doesn't make a country win or lose, it  leads to the destruction of the two
