after Blenheim workbook answers
Answers
'After Blenheim' was written in 1796 by Robert Southey who was an English Romantic poet laureate. It is considered to be an anti-war poem. It shows that war is destructive and futile.
The poet does not describe the war directly in the poem but the conversation between a grandfather and his grandchildren tells about a war and its consequences.
A boy named Peterkin finds a large and round thing. His grandfather says that it is a skull of some poor soldier who was killed in the war. He tells his grandson about the sad consequences of the war and at the same time says that it was a great victory.
Actually, the Battle of Blenheim took place in 1704. The poet Robert Southey wrote it during his Jacobin years, that was around 1790 - 1800. He was against the battle and even refused to look at the palace which was named for the battle. However, by 1820 his views changed and he considered the battle to be the greatest victory of the British.
