The purpose of growing a leguminous crop like lentil in between wheat and rice crops is for nitrogen fixation of the soil. Symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria grow and thrive in the root nodules of leguminous plants; this bacteria plays a part in fixing the nitrogen in the soil.
