After attaining independence, the government of India allowed imports for many products.
Crude petroleum, engineering goods, chemicals, diamond, gold, fertilisers, edible oils, cashew nuts, medicines, non-ferrous metals, machinery, plastic, wool and transport equipments were some of the highly imported items of those times.
However, with time, some of these imported products could be manufactured within the country and hence, their imports have gone down while other products have picked up.
