Subject: Need for educational counselors in schools

Dear Sir,

I wish to draw attention to a shortcoming in the present education system. While schools try their best to support students preparing for major exams, they fail to guide the students well after the secondary school exams. Educational counselors can play an extremely important role here.

Once learners finish the tenth grade, they are required to select subjects for further studies. This selection affects the entire course of the learners’ academic career as well as life. Yet, students are completely at sea at this stage. The school needs to step in, with educational counselors guiding the learners in the right direction.

Since the counselors will get an opportunity to observe the students during school days, they will be able to gauge an individual’s capabilities, interests, strengths and weaknesses. Putting the rubrics together, supported by aptitude test results, they will be in a position to advise the students about what they could pursue successfully. Educational counselors have in-depth understanding of the myriad career options available, which the students and even parents might not be aware of. This will open up new horizons for the learners, that too in areas that they can excel in.

I hope schools as well as the board of education take note of this aspect and work on it, to help reduce stress and increase the achievements of students.

Yours sincerely,

Vinay
