Harshavardhana (590-647 AD) was an Indian emperor who ruled in North India from 606 AD to 647 AD and Kannauj being was its capital. Harshavardhana was famously known as Harsha.
Harshavardhan belonged to the Pushyabhuti family and was the ward of Prabhakarvardhana. His power was seated in the vast area of Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujrat, Bengal, Odishaand the entire of Indo-Gangetic plain North of the Narmada river. Harsha’s attempt to extend his empire to the South resulted in failure and caused his death. His army was crushed by the south Indian Emperor Pulakeshin II of the Chalukya tradition and this ended his peaceful and flourishing reign. Harsh was without a beneficiary and hence the empire was nect ruled by YASHOVARMAN.
