Hitler gave hope to a downtrodden people. It was a false hope, because he led them to ruin, but nobody could predict that. Germany was hit with a double-whammy. First, the punitive sanctions of the Versailles Treaty of World War I and then the Great Depression. Hitler was telling the people what they wanted to hear, such as the mythology of an “Aryan Race.” So the people elected him Chancellor in 1932.
