Explanation:

The joint family was a vital social organization, which widely contributed to productive institutions that have slowly vanished. The disintegration of the joint family into nuclear families resulted in fragmentation of the landholdings between family members. The size of the agriculture landholding among the individuals is decreasing because of the disintegration of joint families. The decentralization of landholding is less economical for paddy cultivation in rural society. Reduced size of the landholding created fewer employment opportunities and many farmers are shifting to alternative livelihood occupations.

The shortage of agriculture farm labor supply has also led to the problem of cultivating the agricultural land and therefore looking for other alternative use of land.

The changeover I was able to see only after spending 6-8 months in my field area and is more apparent in the border and the villages of Kerala. Change is inevitable, but what is happening in Dakshina Kannada agriculture prominence further, as there exist high risk for farmers to lose their source of livelihood to the market economy.
