Agriculture is considered the backbone of Indian economy. ... Agriculture supplies bulk of wage goods required by the non-agricultural sector. It provides raw materials for a large section of industries. Sugar, tea, cotton textiles, jute goods, vegetable oil, etc. industries are regularly fed by agricultural produces.

It is backbone of Nation economy.It includes all those activities which are related to the cultivation of land for production of crops i.e. food crops (rice and wheat) and non food crops (jute)

The eleventh year plan (2007-12) emphasize that agricultural development of the country.

The main features are:

1. Agricultural output depends largely on rainfall and other natural factors like floods, droughts etc.

2. The historical, social and cultural background of state affects agricultural output.

3.Over three fourth of land holdings are of small size. Thus, agriculture is a source of livelihood for farmers.
