Air is a mixture and not a compound because of following reasons: Air can be separated into its constituents such as oxygen, nitrogen etc. by fractional distillation of liquid air. Explanation:
Air is mixture of many gases such nitrogen (71%) , oxygen (21%) , carbon dioxide (0.00008%) . and particles such as dust , smoke, water droplets etc.
As we cannot called air as compound because there is no exact amount of substance present in it , so we call them as mixture.
