Given,

Sp of each machine = ₹12000

total sp = ₹24000 (12000+12000)

CP ON THE MACHINE IN WHICH THE SHOPKEEPER HAD A GAIN:

cp = 100/100+p% × 12000

= 100/100+25 × 12000

100/125 × 12000

cp = ₹9600

CP ON THE MACHINE WHICH THE SHOPKEEPER HAD A LOSS ON:

cp = 100/100-l% × 12000

cp = 100/75 × 12000

cp = ₹16000

total cp = ₹16000+₹9600 = ₹25600

the shopkeeper had a loss

loss = sp - cp

= 25600 - 24000

= ₹1600

loss%

1600/25600 × 100

= 6.25% or 6 1/2%

Solution

SP = 12000 each

CP at 25 % gain

CP= SP×100/(100+gain%)

= 12000×100/100+25

= 12000×100/125

CP= 9600

CP at 25% loss.

CP = SP ×100/(100- loss%)

= 1200×100/100-25

= 1200×100/75

CP = 16000

CP of both machines = 9600+16000

= 25600

SP of both machines = 12000+12000

=24000

loss = CP-SP= 25600-24000 = 16000

loss % = loss/ CP ×100 = 1600/25600×100

= 6.25%
