The acid due to production of which they get muscle cramps after doing the heavy exercise is Lactic acid.

Let us understand how lactic acid is produced after heavy exercise by muscle cells.

Respiration in Muscle Cells:

  • Muscle cells exhibit aerobic respiration in normal conditions, in which they consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide and water along with the liberation of energy.
  • However, in this case, when the person does a heavy exercise, oxygen is used up rapidly.
  • This causes a temporary deficiency of oxygen in her muscle cells. While the demand for energy remains high at the time of exercise
  • Hence, muscle cells underwent anaerobic respiration to fulfil this energy demand. When muscle cells perform anaerobic respiration, partial breakdown of glucose leads to the production of lactic acid and liberation of energy.
  • As this lactic acid accumulated in the muscles, cramps are experienced.

Note- A hot water bath or massage can be done to get relief from the cramps experienced after a heavy exercise.
