One day two men, Shamsher and Raghav, reached Akbar's court with a problem. Each of the two men said that he was the owner and the other one was the servant, but there was no way to prove it. Shamsher said that he had gone to Afghanistan to earn riches, and had left his servant Raghav in charge of his wealth and property. However, when Shamsher returned, Raghav refused to hand over his belongings to him. Raghav on the other hand insisted that he was the rightful owner of the property and Shamsher was lying outright, to get rich the easy way.

Birbal simply smiled and stated that he could read people’s minds. He asked both the men to lie down facing the floor. Then Birbal ordered a soldier to cut off the servant’s head with his sword. The soldier was confused, but he followed the order and took out the sword from its cover. Hearing the noise, Raghav, who was indeed the servant, got up and ran to the king, and frantically begged for forgiveness. Akbar was very pleased with Birbal and rewarded him handsomely. The complicated case had been settled with great ease.
