Cause formation of aldehyde hydrates is reversible reaction while formation of chloral hydrate is irreversible.
● Explaination -
Aldehydes react with water to form aldehyde hydrate.
R-CHO + H2O ↔ R-CH(OH)2
However, these hydrates are unstable and reaction gets reversed to formation of aldehydes again.
Whereas chloral reacts with water to form hydrate which is stable.
CCl3-CHO → CCl3-C(OH)2
