Algae belongs to a kingdom protista which is a diverse group containing organisms ranging from unicellular to multicellular.

Algae range from microscopic level such as plankton to macroscopic seaweeds which are several meters long.

Some members of algae have plant like structures like roots, stems and leaves as in kelp. Another important structure present in few species of algae is gas-filled gall bladder for buoyancy, known as pneumatocysts.
