A piece of chalk can easily broken into pieces when hammered but it's not possible in case of iron rod as the forces between the particles of chalk is very less that it cannot hold the particles together when hammered, but I case of iron rod there are metalic bond which are way more strongly than those between chalk particles. So, that's why A piece of chalk can be broken down into small pieces when hammered but it is not possible to do so in case an iron bar.

Explanation:

The strength of these force of attraction is lesser in chalk hence it could be easily broken into small pieces by hammering. But the strength of inter molecular force of attraction is very strong in iron therefore it is not possible to break them into pieces by hammering.
