As we go down a group,
i) Effective nuclear charge increases,
ii) Atomic size or radius also increases.
From this we can say that the atoms of element at the top level of a group exert more control over its valence electron. so as we go down a group the valence electron go faraway from the nucleus of the elements.
As a result the tendency to loss electron increases. That is the metallic character of element increases as we go down a group.
Ex. Na belonging to 1st group at 3rd period has less metallic property than K belonging to 4th period.
