The energy of the flame is sufficient to excite the electrons to higher energy level. ... Hence, the electrons emit energy and come back to the original levels. This emitted energy falls in the visible region of electromagnetic spectrum. This is why, alkali metals imparts colour to flame.

Because the outerMost electron of alkali metals get excited by absorbing energy from flame and after returning from higher level to lower level it's emits radiations which shows colour

colour depend on nature of metal and energy provided by flame
