As all efforts ceased, Douglas began to relax. He felt his legs become limp and a blackness swept over his brain. It wiped out fear and terror, there was no more panic. He felt quiet and at peace as if there was nothing to be afraid of. It seemed to be nice, this drowsiness and the need to go to sleep. There was no need to jump, he was too tired to jump and the feeling of being carried away gently was nice. He seemed to float along in space, tender arms around him like his mother's and sleep washing over him. He crossed into oblivion and the curtain of life fell.

Answer:

. When Douglas found himself deep down into the water with a yellow glow, stark terror gripped him. The terror ripped him apart and he had no control over it. He felt paralysed, stiff and rigid with fear. Even the screams in his throat were frozen. It was only his throbbing heart that made him realise that he was still alive.
