All elements that are present in a plant need not be essential to its survival.

Nutrients that plants require in larger amounts are called macronutrients.

About half of the essential elements are considered macronutrients: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur.

Nitrogen is also used in the synthesis of some vitamins.

Every elements found in plants need not be essential for their survival. It is because -

1. Only those elements are essential which has a specific physical as well as structural role in the body of plants.

2. Such elements must be so necessary that without them, the plants will not be able to survive.

3. In deficiency of the essential elements, plants will suffer from many disorders.

4. Examples of such elements that are essential : Carbon, Copper, Nickel, Calcium, etc.
